Walk in and train on your own within 3 to 5 months, by addressing the fear no trainer has ever asked you about.
If nothing changes in the first session, you don’t pay.
This is the most common thing women tell me. It has nothing to do with motivation, and once it is understood properly it changes quickly.
Every trainer took you straight to the equipment. That was always the mistake.
Until that changes, no programme sticks, however good it is.
"I feel too overwhelmed to walk into my gym."
A feeling most of my clients recognise instantly
You get to the gym door and something stops you before you ever get inside. I have seen this in woman after woman, and it has never once been about motivation.
I am Patrick Keane. I have spent over ten years as a personal trainer, working mainly with women who are new to the gym. Having spent several years working at David Lloyd gyms, I started to see the same patterns over and over again, and that is why I built the Walk In Method.
I have watched hundreds of trainers take people straight to the gym floor when they are not ready for it. There is a clear process you need to go through to get the outcome you want. It starts by understanding your fears and working out exactly what it is you want.
My work helps women become confident in themselves, in the gym and outside it.
A 2025 survey of 1,000 UK women by Gymshark found that 88% had experienced some form of anxiety in the gym, and two-thirds had skipped a workout entirely because of it. That’s not a fitness problem. That’s the environment, not the individual.
“I was feeling internally deeply down and unhealthy, experiencing profound grief after losing my beloved husband to a highly aggressive cancer. It took a heavy toll on my physical and psychological health, and I even felt I had lost my identity.”
“When I decided to go to the gym, I didn’t know where to start. Personal training became an investment in my future self. Exercise became a vital anchor: it helped me recover physically, regain a sense of control, and move forward at a sustainable pace.”
“I lost over 25kg through the training. I’m not just exercising, I’m rebuilding my life. Training for my future self. This experience is empowering, hopeful, and life-changing.”
Away from the gym entirely. We name the specific thing that has been stopping you. Once it has a name that sits outside of you, it stops being who you are.
We map every gym situation that triggers the fear and start weakening it in conversation, before your body is ever asked to be in the space.
One level at a time. Thirty minutes inside. Then thirty minutes going through what you felt, not what you lifted.
Fortnightly check-ins keep it that way. This stage ends when you decide you no longer need it. That’s always the goal.
The moment the whole method is built for.
I train the mind before the body. The process starts completely outside the gym.
The Walk In Method is a new name for an approach I’ve been refining with real clients for years. These women didn’t go through a formal four-stage programme, that structure came later, but they went through exactly this process: understanding the fear before ever touching a weight.
"Calling this personal training doesn’t do it justice. Yes, I learnt how to lift weights. But more importantly, I learnt how to stop listening to the part of my brain that had convinced me I didn’t belong. Every step felt achievable, and before I realised it I was doing things I’d convinced myself were impossible."
"I’ve had personal trainers before. They all gave me programmes. Patrick never started with squats or calories. He wanted to understand what happened in my head the moment I thought about walking into a gym. Nothing was rushed and I never once felt judged."
"I signed up because I wanted to stop feeling terrified of the gym, but what I got was so much bigger than that. I learnt that the voice telling me everyone was judging me wasn’t actually me. I speak up more at work now."
"I used to avoid certain areas because I didn’t want people seeing me struggle. I’d stick to the treadmill because I was too scared to touch the weights. Now I walk in with a plan, pick up the weights I want, and actually feel like I belong there. Walking onto the gym floor alone was one of the most intimidating things I’d ever done. Now it’s one of the things I’m most proud of."
"I genuinely thought I needed a gym buddy. I couldn’t imagine walking onto the gym floor alone. I felt like I didn’t belong and had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Now something weird has happened, I actually prefer training alone. I know exactly what I’m doing. I know how to use the equipment. And I’m no longer looking around wondering whether everyone is judging me."
Most women who message me have already paid for a gym they could not bring themselves to walk into.

Most women are training on their own within three to five months. That is the point where you stop needing me, and it has always been the point.

Because everything you’ve tried was aimed at the gym itself. The actual block, a fear response that’s never been directly addressed, falls outside what most trainers are trained to work with.

No. Stages One and Two happen entirely away from the gym. If you don’t have a gym yet, choosing the right one becomes part of the process.
It depends on the person. Stage One is a minimum of four. Most women complete the full journey in three to five months, at whatever pace feels right.
Message me on WhatsApp with where you’re at right now. I respond personally, same day, and tell you honestly whether this is the right fit before you commit to anything.
That’s not a criticism of anything you’ve tried before. It’s simply that most personal training is built to teach movement, not to address the fear that stops you using it. When the actual block gets worked on directly, the change you feel in the first session is usually the clearest answer to that question.
That’s normal, and it’s exactly what Stage One is built for. Most women haven’t put words to it before, they’ve just felt it and avoided it. You don’t need to arrive with an explanation ready, that’s the work we do together.
Just a conversation, not a gym. I ask what the gym actually feels like for you, not what you think you should say, and we start from there. Most people tell me they’ve never had anyone actually listen to this properly before. Nothing physical happens in session one unless you’re ready for it.
No. Some clients have never trained at all. Others have years of experience with everything except the weights floor specifically, or freeze the moment they’re training alone. The method works the same way either way, because it’s addressing the fear, not your fitness level.

I come to you. The early sessions happen somewhere local and quiet, not in a gym.
